Gore Bike Wear Ladies Alp X Waterproof Cycling Jacket

Gore Ladies Alp X Jacket

Me posing on the Col de Tourmalet

Having experienced the rain downpours that both Wales and New Zealand have to offer, I had a fair idea of what I wanted from a cycle touring jacket.  I’m a tall girl at 5’11” and have a long torso, long arms and wide hips, so I wanted something that was long enough to cover my top half adequately whilst also giving some protection to my hips and backside in the wet.

I’d looked around at a few GORE alternatives such as the Power, but found I had to get a size 18 (I’m only a size 14) to get the length and even then it was struggling to cover my butt when I sat down.  There was a lot of width in the larger sizes that made me look more rotund even though the fit of it on the tag said “slim”.  I also didn’t like that the Power had no pockets in the front, and that it was the one colour all over.

I considered getting the mens Alp X and tried it on in red and black, it definitely covered everything well but was quite heavy, expensive and a bit of overkill for a summer cycle trip through Europe.  Eventually I bought online the Alp-X ladies jacket in pink (or light red as it was called on some sites), mostly based on the fact that it had a bit of black panelling mixed in with the pink, a hood and a front chest pocket.  When it arrived, I was pleasantly surprised to find that it fit perfectly: really really long arms, an actual slim fit but with sufficiently width for hips at the bottom, the black panelling extends down the arms and around to the back, a nifty extendable butt flap, a double zip up the middle (which I think you use the inside one for ventilation), reflective piping around arms and back, adjustable cuffs, chest & back pocket, hood, elastic adjusters at the hips, and most importantly it looks great!

Pros:

  • Good value
  • Comfortable
  • Looks good
  • Good to wear on and off the bike
  • Good ventilation

Cons:

  • Get’s dirty around the cuffs
  • Arms are very long, too long for some
  • Zips are small and hard to grip with gloves
  • Would have liked underarm vents
